Mar 12 2012 "Maroney, Raisman, Bross to Compete at Jesolo"

World vault champion McKayla Maroney and world medalists Rebecca Bross and Alexandra Raisman will headline the U.S. team to the City of Jesolo (Italy) Trophy in Italy, March 31. They will be joined by six seniors and five juniors, including the junior trio that will compete at the Pacific Rim Championships.

Jan 14 2012 "U.S. women's gymnastics team to be named at trials"

In a switch from the last two Olympics, USA Gymnastics will name its full women's squad for the London Games at the conclusion of Olympic trials in San Jose on July 1.

In 2004 and 2008 the top two women all-arounders were named to the Olympic team at trials and the rest of the team was picked at a selection camp near the start of the Olympics. The men, meanwhile, had continued naming its teams at trials.

The women had received more time in the past at the request of national team coordinator Martha Karolyi, but that left USA Gymnastics open to criticism about billing a qualifying meet as the Olympic trials when only two gymnasts were selected. Even those gymnasts had to prove readiness at the selection camp or risk being removed from the team.

But a shorter time frame between trials and the London Games' opening ceremony on July 27, as well as NBC's programming window, makes it necessary to name the team at trials, USA Gymnastics President Steve Penny said.

"Basically it comes down to timing," Penny said. "Timing is conducive to selecting the full team (at trials) because there are only a few weeks between the dates of our trials and the Olympic Games."
